Having reached a time of counting off instead of up, I have leisure 18 been reading just a little about methods to make my "golden years" happy, healthy and productive.

 

No, strike that last. I'm pretty much over productivity. I did what They explained to for four decades and so i could do things i want for two, with luck. So far it is going fine. Which makes me happy, so cross happiness off, too.

 

Which leaves "healthy." Finding health advice is simple these days. With a big bolus of baby boomers in their regretting-the-cheeseburgers years, in fact, you can't really avoid.

 

The more from it , though, the greater I recognize how much of things i see is useless.

 

Let me ask an issue. I'm not sure much about the demographics of Gazette-Journal readers, but nationally three-quarters of newspaper visitors 45 or older. The only age bracket by which almost (not quite) half read a daily paper is 65-plus. You're part of a pretty mature group.

 

So: Are you stupider than you had been Ten years ago?

 

Sure, you lose your keys now and then. Aren't able to find the car within the parking lot sometimes. That's normal. But they are you less smart?

 

Then you probably don't have to find out again to stop smoking, do you?

 

I do not understand smoking whatsoever. It's repelled me from the age of Three or four. However if you simply get it done, you have made your decision. The sunday paper story or Web site suggesting it's unhealthful is really a waste of space and time.

 

What about losing weight? Any doubts, from the health perspective? (Don't veer into a rant about society's unrealistic expectations or the importance of self-acceptance, please; we're talking physical health.) No?

 

Then you definitely won't profit particularly from warnings to "maintain a healthy weight," will you?

 

Physical exercise? Ever heard "At least Half an hour most times of the week"? Apart from every time you pick up a magazine or turn on the tv, I mean?

 

Of course. Guess what happens science says you ought to be doing. You decide to do it or decided not to. Additional information isn't likely to be beneficial. Yet you will get it 10 times this week.

 

Two decades ago, before we were geezers, I wrote a column asking "older people" when they were offended by assumptions that age had built them into incompetent. ("Seniors, if a stranger says you are the Big Winner and he needs your charge card to pay off all of your bills, consider carefully...") Most older people who responded said they did resent it, and most from the younger ones predicted that if they lived to become 50 (possibly even older!), they'd.

 

Now they're for the reason that range. Me, too. We're closer to the finish compared to beginning, and many of us would like to push that end away awhile. You don't need to have a cardiac arrest at 53 when we can fend them back until we've introduced a grandchild to trout fishing, ballet and also the oeuvre of Jerry Lee Lewis.
